Arthur Sullivan Piano Concerto No. 2
by Johannes Glück
The Arthur Sullivan Piano Concerto No. 2 is, like Concerto No. 1, an original score by Johannes Glück that re-imagines the graceful melodic brilliance of Sir Arthur Sullivan in an intriguing new way: musical themes from Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operas and Sullivan’s ballet music, arranged and orchestrated in a manner reminiscent of the form and style of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s piano concertos.
„Movement I opens cute and vibrant and becomes very Mozart-ish in the development section – I can’t think why 😉 It ends with a vigorous cadenza reprising the major musical subjects – and then some more. Movement II playfully blends some of Arthur Sullivan’s most gorgeous melodies set to lyrics about love. However it begins and ends in the parallel minor, converting an originally joyful tune into delicate melancholy. The third movement is a happy rondo, going Allegro from bar one to the end, with the exception of a little final cadenza for the soloist.“ – Johannes Glück
